Clay County Assessment Survey

Spencer, IA (KICD)--Results from a Clay County Needs Assessment Survey have been released.

ISU Extension Community and Economic Development Specialist Jane Nolan-Goeken says more than 500 households participated in the survey conducted this past June and July. The survey was sponsored by three entities including the city of Spencer where 72 percent of those who responded said they would like to see sidewalks incorporated into residential area with only 26 percent in favor of requiring sidewalks in non-residential areas. The need for a 2nd bridge in town was identified with 40 percent saying 4th Avenue West for the location and 37 percent pointing to 10th Avenue East. 70 percent of city residents says the city should do more to encourage recycling.

The Clay County Community Foundation wanted to know about funding priorities. The top five include quality jobs, healthcare and wellness programs, affordable housing, small business start up, and early childhood care. More that two thirds of respondents noted that they contribute to a non-church based charity.

The Clay County Local Housing Trust Fund portion of the survey focused on financial eligibility . Results showed that 37 percent of households responding fall under the eligibility requirements for the program.

Goeken says slightly more than half of the surveys were returned.
