Council Preview 11-18

Spencer, IA (KICD)--The Spencer City Council meets in regular session this evening with plans to move forward, halt, and come to a conclusion on a number of projects.

A public hearing on items related to the 2010 West 11th Street Project will take place with a bid letting of December 15th. The project for the most part consists of complete reconstruction of West 11th Street from Grand Avenue to West 7th Avenue. Funding will come from SAFTEA-LU, Stimulus, Sanitary/Storm Sewer Reserves, Street Reserves, SMU as well as Special Assessments. The council is expected to approve advertising to the Safe Routes to School Coordinator and will likely approve a resolution for a FEMA Safe Room project which calls for two storm shelters to be constructed under 18th street, that would connect the Clay County Fairgrounds to the Fairground parking lot. The Clay County Fair has agreed to pay for the 15% match required by the grant.

The 2009 RISE Green Industrial Center Paving Project is likely to be be suspended due to the lateness in the year. The new completion date would be May 15th of 2010.

The final items of note is for the council to decide whether or not to move forward with a pet cemetery. This item was has been discussed at several Public Works Committee meetings over the last several years. After a lengthy discussion, the Public Works Committee was unable to reach consensus. The committee then referred this issue back to the City Council for an up or down vote on whether or not to move forward on establishing a municipal pet cemetery.

Tonight\'s meeting starts at 6:30 in the council chambers of Spencer City Hall.
