Long Election Rundown
Area (KICD)--KICD News is taking a look at some area races for the upcoming general election.
In Clay County for Spencer the lone contested race is for an at-large post on the city council. Incumbent Dave Scott will face off against Complete Recovery owner Randy Plagman. Webb Mayor Ken Essick is being challenged by Mindy Sylvester. In Everly Mayor Bud Meyer will be joined on the ballot by Keith Fliss. The city of Greenville will choose a new Mayor out of Scott Brown and Jennifer Samson. Four are on file for a pair of city council seats in Everly including Tabitha Howe, Johnnie L. King, and incumbents Bill Burgeson and Becky Smoot.
For Dickinson County Lake Park Mayor John Engel will face off against Ken Fiala. City Council incumbents Lance Heikens, Richard, Packebush, and Gary Taber look to fend off Keith Nitzchke, Clark Rebkers, and. Gilbert Zahren for three open spots. Don Lamb is the lone candidate to fill Virgil Wahlman’s Mayoral post. Wahlman however is running for a one of three open seats on the Milford Council. He will be joined on the ballot by Christopher Hinshaw and incumbents Michael Anderson and Keith Feller. Neal Christensen, Steve Dulin, and incumbents Susan Larsen and Jerry Robinson look to fill three spots on the Okoboji Council. Scot Matthews looks to unseat Terril Mayor Tim Fairchild. Incumbents Elwin Lark and Jeri Nissen and newcomer Kent Heazlett will vie for two spots on the Terril Council. Wahpeton council incumbents Wayne Johnson, James Keck, and Thomas Rierson filed for another term and will be joined on the ballot by Ron Newgard.
Taking a look at Palo Alto County voters in Ayrshire will pick two from Incumbent Pauline Miller, Michael Garrelts, Gerri Jessen, and Jeff Moore for the city council. Anessa Bailey, Jenifer Buettner, and Brian Kathman are looking to fill an unexpired term on the Ayrshire council. Peg Lewis will join incumbents Kurt Bonstetter, Harry Bormann, Kevin Long, Dave Waldschmidt, and Deb Weisbrod as five spots are up for the Cylinder City Council. In Emmetsburg 1st ward councilmember Steve Finer will attempt to fend off Ted Ellis. In ward 3 incumbent Pam Smith faces a challenge from Brian Malm.
O’Brien County has a number of contested races. Calumet Mayor Steve Loshman will be challenged by Stephen Erdmann. Sanborn Council incumbents Kelly O’Brien and Ron Schott will be joined on the ballot by Michael Benner. Sheldon Mayor Kurt Tatsumi did not file this year. Councilman Ronald Rensink and Katricia Rider will vie for the post. David Johannsen and Alan Mills are on file for the Mayoral position in Sutherland.
In Buena Vista County Jason Stoltzfus will challenge Lakefield Mayor Gene Mandernach. Also in Lakeside there are three open council seats. Those running include incumbents Dennis Fisher, Kathleen Pomrenke, and Warren Wilson. They will be joined on the ballot by Randy Jacobsen. Two open spots on the Marathon council will be contested amongst Dustin Klatt, Tony Rydstrom, Teresa Snyder, and incumbent Kathy Schulz. In Newell Dana Davis, Pamela Wilken, and incumbents Ethel Crowley, Shirley Heinrich, and Nathan Kier are looking to fill three spots. Jim Wise will look to take over as Sioux Rapids Mayor and unseat Andrew Hasley. Allen Sorenson is the lone incumbent looking to fill two open seats on the Sioux Rapids Council. William Bell, William Johnson, Steve Lonning, and Paige Patten are also running. Storm Lake Mayor Jon Kruse is up against Willard Christensen. There will be two new faces on the Storm Lake Council as Dan Anderson, Jody Hocking, and Michael Porsch are new names on the ballot. James Walker filed for the Truesdale Mayoral Post currently held by Stan Bucholz who is stepping down. Five seats are up for grabs on the Truesdale council. Steve Bovero, Donald Brazel, Needra Ripke, and Linda Walker fill out a crowded ballot along with incumbents Chris Barrickman, Barry Meyer, Tina Shannon, and James Weiland.
In Emmet County Estherville Mayor Lyle Hevern will be joined on the ballot by John Hanson. At Large Estherville councilmember Larry Anderson faces a challenge from Amber Houge. Ringsted council incumbents Darryl Anderson and Gaylen Zeman will look to fend off Kenneth Lowry. Nobody filed for the position of Wallingford Mayor. Five open seats on their council will be picked from Jeremy Bodle, Betsy Dostal, Connie Olsen, and incumbents Jarrod Fischer, Linda Mickelson, and Terry Osher.
In Osceola County the lone contested race on the ballot is for the Harris city council where there are two open seats. Incumbents Vic McKenna and Phil Hibma will be joined on the ballot by Pamela Kramer and Russell Meier.
Heading down to Pocahontas County there are two open seats on the Fonda council where incumbent Jeanne Tiedeman is on file along with Logan Duane Nehman, Angela Podraza, and Sandy Rix. Havelock Mayor Dave Ferguson will not run this cycle. Those looking to fill the post include Sandy Brown, Jeff Peters, Garland Smith, and Amanda Tripp. Havelock has three open council seats. Lori Barth, Jeannette Ferguson, Shirley Francis, Richard Hoover, Anthony Krips, Melissa Mutchler-Gisch, and incumbents Judy Krips and Rick Westfall fill out the ballot. Four are on file for a pair of seats on the Laurens Council as Ken Kunickis, Tom Madsen, Matt Vanderpool, and incumbent Clarence Stepker look to fill the positions. In Plover Mayor Dirk Lindgren is challenged by Paul Hellickson, and Allan Minkler. Incumbent Janice Van Deest, Darla Johnson, and Robert Meurer are up for two spots on the Plover council. A lot of change is in storm for Rolfe as Thomas Benge and Nick Graham are competing to fill the Mayoral post being left by Gloria Gunderson. No incumbents are on file for three spots on the Rolfe council. Those on the ballot include Joni Ham, William Howland, Ricky Inman, Tony Kenny, Lana Pratt, Stella Samson, David Thoren, Chresten Westergaard, and Andy Williams.
In Cherokee County the only contested race is in Washta where James Michael Bauman, Deborah Cockburn, Jamie Lee Deeds, Scott Jenkins, Michelle, McCampbell, and Chris Shea are on file for three open spots.
Lastly in Sioux County Alton incumbent councilmembers Blake Bengard, John Menning, and Jerry Henrich look to fill three open seats with Andy Vanommermen on file as well. There are two spots on the Boyden council. Justin Beukelman, Lee Starkenburg, and incumbent Dale Winter will battle for two spots. Robert Fischer did not file to run for Granville Mayor again. Jeff Bunkers and Darrell Steffes are up for the post. There are two spots on the Granville Council up for grabs with Dennis Friedmann, Karl Kellen, and Crystal Lammers on the ballot. Hawarden council incumbents Patricia Anderson, Kody Hedden, and George Jacobs are joined by Monte Harvery in the race for three open spots. Harlan Rouse is looking to fill the position of Hospers Mayor as John Den Hartog did not file. Darren Hulst, Brent Jager, and incumbent Dan Dykstra are up for two spots on the Hospers council. In Hull there are three council seats open. Joel Leusink and Ethan Vaas are on the ballot with incumbents Dave Van Otterloo and Eric Rankin. Matlock Mayor Leona Johnson faces a challenger in Korwyn Roos. Donald Van Horssen is the lone candidate to replace Maurice Mayor Perry Jager. In Orange City Daryl Beltman will step down as Mayor. Les Douma and Mick Snieder are up for the job.
All other openings will be filled by write in or have the same or less number of candidates on file for the open spots.
