Storm Lake Police and Fire personnel were dispatched to the intersection of Flindt Drive and East 4th Street. It was found a 1999 Chevy sedan being driven by Gertrude Gutermuth of Storm Lake struck a livestock truck being driven by Chad Deboer of Pierce, Nebraska. The collision caused the livestock truck’s fuel tank to rupture and approximately 50 gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the roadway.
Fire fighters and Storm Lake Street Department personnel worked to stop the truck’s fuel tank from leaking additional diesel on the roadway. Absorbing materials and absorbent booms were deployed to stop the diesel fuel from flowing into the storm sewer. It is believed just a few gallons of diesel fuel reached the storm sewer and that material was successfully trapped and removed by the Street Department before reaching the lake. The remainder of the diesel fuel was contained to and removed from the roadway.In addition the Street Department used vacuum equipment to clean the roadway and storm sewer.
The Iowa DNR responded to the scene and observed the clean up operations. No environmental impact is anticipated.
The livestock truck was full of hogs and a second truck was dispatched from the Tyson Plant and the hogs were successfully transferred to an operational truck.
Gutermuth was transported by ambulance to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in the accident. She was cited for Failure to Yield.Flint Drive was closed and traffic was re-routed for nearly two hours.
Rock Rapids, IA (KICD) -- A Rock Rapids teen is charged after eluding police in a chase then crashing a vehicle.
Around 1:45 Saturday morning, the Lyon County Sheriff's Department attempted to stop a 1998 Chevy S-10 Pickup for a traffic violation. The driver, 17-year old Alex Ohling turned off it's headlights and proceeded at a high rate of speed north. The vehicle left the roadway just north of 130th street, then went through a field to the east. At that point the Deputy stopped the pursuit.
Then, on Sunday afternoon, the Sheriff's Department was notified that the vehicle was involved in an accident shortly after it left the roadway during the pursuit. Ohling reportedly hit a terrace out in a field and rolled approximately 4 times. Ohling sustained minor injuries in the crash.
Ohling is being charged with aggravated eluding, . driving without headlights, reckless driving, violation of restricted license, and driving on wrong side of the highway. The vehicle,sustained approximately $8,000 in damage.
Storm Lake, IA (KICD)--A Newell man was arrested Sunday afternoon for choking a woman while she was holding an infant.
Police advised by witnesses and the victim that 23-year-old Kyle Evers had engaged in an argument with his child’s mother and allegedly grabbed and choked the mother while she was holding a three month old infant.
Police arrested Evers and charged him with Domestic Assault Strangulation and Child Endangerment. He was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail and held without bond.
No injuries were reported to police.
A report has been filed with the Iowa Department of Human Services.
Storm Lake, IA (KICD)--A wanted Laurens woman was arrested Sunday night.
Storm Lake Police were dispatched to the Storm Lake Wal-Mart Store in reference to assisting a motorist who had locked their keys in their car. 35-year-old Sandra Nelson initially gave Police a false name and is was determined she was wanted out of Emmet County for Contempt of Court reference Forgery.
Police further learned that Nelson had been previously banned from the Wal-Mart property for prior theft incidents.
Police arrested Nelson on the Emmet County warrant and further charged her with Tampering With Records, Interference With Official Acts and Criminal Trespassing. She was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $4,400 cash bond.
Storm Lake, IA (KICD) -- A Storm Lake man faces a drug charge, after calling police to surrender to a waarrant he thought he had on him.
Storm Lake Police said 23-year old Jorge Arambula-Munoz called their office Saturday, saying he wanted to surrender on a warrant. Police then went to his residence, and upon arrival smelled the odor of marijuana..A search of the house turned up some marijuana. Arambula-Munoz was arrested for Possession of Marijuana.
Officers later determined there were no warrants issued for Arambula-Munoz
