Fish Barrier Operational

Milford, IA (KICD)--The electric fish barrier at Lower Gar outlet is fully operational.

Iowa DNR Fisheries Biologist Mike Hawkins tells KICD News says they fired up all seven of the pulsers for the first time last week and everything worked as planned. Hawkins says the project is on track to finish withing it's budget of $961,000.

Hawkins says the lakes are currently about 18 inches below crest so it could be a while until the new fish barrier is fully tested.

The desire to construct the electric fish barrier came after Asian Carp were found in East Okoboji and Spirit Lake in the fall of 2011 after flooding on the Missouri River.
