Student Sensor Pilot Program

Spencer, IA (KICD)--The Spencer School District is one of three districts across the state set to take part in a pilot program aimed as school bus safety.

Transportation Director Julie Nemmers tells KICD News that her role as Vice President of the Iowa Pupil Transportation Board allowed her to learn of the Smile Big student detection system, which features sensor detection around the bus.

The program was created in honor of 11-year-old Justin Bradfield of Janesville, who was killed in October of 2011 after running in front of a school bus to get something he had dropped.

The sensor will detect motion within a 3-4 foot distance form all sides of the bus with an LED and sound alarm going off.

Spencer, Mason City and Janesville are the three districts taking part in the pilot program. All 12 of the Spencer District school buses will be equipped with the system at no cost. They will be utilized for the remainder of the school year.

If the system works as anticipated the group will look to introduce a bill to the Iowa Legislature requiring all school buses in the state to utilize the technology.
