Emmet County Sheriff Mike Martens says they were called out at 11:09 to 180th Street, a quarter mile south of Estherville. It was determined that 23-year-old Austin Schmaus was heading south when his 2005 Ford Pickup struck the east side of the cement bridge over Brown Creek, then crossed the road before coming to rest in the west ditch.
Schmaus fled on foot prior to the arrival of Deputies. He was found three hours later and was taken to Avera Holy Family Hospital by private vehicle. After being treated and released Schmaus was cited for leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, having an open container, and failure to have control. A passenger received minor injuries but was not hospitalized.
Estherville Police assisted.
