Spencer, IA (KICD) -- Snowfall reducing visibilities and making potential poor driving conditions, means extra caution is needed when driving.
With potential of up to 5 inches of snow forecast, planning ahead for potential driving problems is a good idea.
Iowa State Patrol Safety Education Officer Vincent Kurtz says if you become stranded during a storm stay in your vehicle.
Some tips include using your mobile phone to call 911 and observing , mileposts, crossroads or landmarks to help guide them, turning on your vehicle’s warning/flashing lights, remain calm and be patient, run your vehicle about 10 minutes every hour to stay warm, crack a window to avoid carbon monoxide build-up and clear away any snow from the vehicle’s tailpipe so the exhaust can escape, and utilize the resources in your winter survival kit.
The best advice Kurtz can give is to simply not travel if it is not neccessary.
