Quarterly Hogs Report Should Show Slight Decline

Spencer, IA: (Dec 26, 2012) - Government data due out later this week are expected to show a modest decline in the size of the nation’s swine herd as producers faced high feed costs and negative margins for the hogs they sold from late summer though the fall.

A survey of analysts suggests that the total hog inventory on December 1st was 65.7 million head, down 0.9% from one year ago.

The estimates for animals kept for breeding averaged 0.7% below a year ago at 5.7 million head.

Analysts expect supplies of hogs kept for marketing to be 0.9% below a year ago.

Traders will also be watching the pigs saved per litter data, as efficiencies in that area have consistently boosted supplies in recent years.
The quarterly Hogs & Pigs report from USDA will be released at 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
