Sioux County Attorney Coleman McAllister says 37-year-old John Joseph Nelson was sentenced for the crimes of 3rd Degree Burglary, a Class D Felony, and 5th Degree Theft.
On June 19th, a rural Granville man contacted the Sioux County Sheriff’s department to report a theft of a hay feeder from his barn located on an abandoned farm place in rural Sioux County. A trail camera was set up in the barn, and revealed blurry photos of a man stealing the hay feeder from the barn.
The Sioux County Sheriff Department investigated, and after identifying Nelson as a potential suspect, he was interviewed on June 21st, by a deputy sheriff at which time he confessed to the burglary and theft.
Nelson was sentenced to an indeterminate five-year prison term on the burglary charge and to 15 days in jail on the theft charge. The five-year prison term was suspended; however, Nelson must actually serve the 15 days in jail. He will also serve two years probation.
