Hog Barn Blaze



Storm Lake, IA (KICD)--Storm Lake Firefighters are called to a fire in a hog barn shortly after 11:00 Tuesday morning.

Upon arrival at 1452 550th Street Firefighters entered the structure and encountered light smoke in the building.  A small fire was found in an attic space and on the floor near the east end of the building and was extinguished.  Crews removed burning cellulose insulation from the attic space to stop the spread of the fire.

An investigation determined that contractors were welding in the building when methane, from a manure pit below the building, entered the space and was ignited by sparks from the welding operation.

The fire burned through plastic ceiling panels and entered the attic space. There was additional heat damage to approximately 50 percent of the ceiling panels in the 18,500 square foot building. Structural damage to the building was minimal. Damage is estimated at $30,000.

No injuries were reported and Firefighters remained on scene for approximately 1 hour.  The Buena Vista County Sheriff's Department assisted.
 
The building is owned by FMP LLP of Storm Lake.
