Not Enough Rain In Weather Forecasts

Spencer, IA: (Oct 19, 2012) - Earlier we reported that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) was forecasting equal chances for normal, above-normal, and below normal rainfall in November. Iowa State University Extension Climatologist Elwynn Taylor says “normal” won’t do it.

Much of Iowa received pretty decent rains last weekend, but not here in northwest Iowa, according to Dr. Taylor.

Dr. Taylor says the weather system over the Midwest this week is massive, covering an area from central South Dakota to Pennsylvania and from southern Missouri to Canada. The storm system brought lots of wind to northwest Iowa, but not much rain.

Dr. Taylor says an El Nino did form this summer, which should have brought some much-needed rains, but he says it has failed to live up to expectations.

Dr. Taylor made his comments in an interview w/ KICD on Friday.
