Time To Expand Cow Herds

Spencer, IA: (Oct 05, 2012) - U.S. beef cow numbers are the lowest they have been in more than five decades while beef prices are at historic highs.

In spite of high feed costs, Ohio State University’s Stan Smith says it is time to “cow-up.” He says grazing management and feed alternatives for beef cows give those producers an advantage over hog and poultry producers in terms of managing costs.

Another option, Smith says, is to grow alternative annual or bi-annual forages on acres available from July through the fall.
