Newell, IA (KICD) -- The identity of a Newell man killed in a Tuesday morning mishap in Buena Vista County has been released.
Buena Vista County Deputies, Newell Fire Department, and Newell Police initially responded to the accident around 9:20 Tuesday morning, 3 and a half mile east of Newell on Highway 7. Upon arrival, it was determined a westbound car with a single occupant collided headed-on with an eastbound semi tractor-trailer. The collision sent both vehicles into the north and south ditches.
The driver of the car, 24-year-old Jonathon Ohrtman, was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi driver, 32-year old Robert Bainbridge of Albert City was slightly injured and was transported by private vehicle to medical care.
Upon investigation, it was determined the westbound car crossed the center line into the path of the semi. During the extrication of the victim of the crash, several firefighters suffered heat exhaustion. One Newell firefighter was taken by ambulance to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center.
Also assisting at the scene was the Fonda Fire Department, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa DOT, Pocahontas County Sheriffs Office, Newell and Fonda Ambulance, and the Buena Vista County Medical Examiners Office.
