Armstrong Mercury Charge

Armstrong, IA (KICD)--A charge has been filed in connection to a mercury spill in Armstrong.

A criminal complaint filed by Armstrong Police with the Emmet County Clerk of Court notes that 49-year-old Mark Peterson gave a voluntary statement that he transported a 40 pound bottle of mercury on July 20th that was two thirds full from a home at 805 2nd Avenue to Dale's Rec at 607 6th Street in Armstrong.  The bottle spilled at Dale's Rec, where Peterson attempted to clean it up.  He then took the bottle back to the aforementioned home.

Peterson was charges with unlawful transportation of hazardous waste.  He has since been released on personal recognizance.

The environmental protection agency responded for cleanup efforts.  Peterson and several children who came into contact with the mercury in a backyard sandbox are still being monitored for health issues.
