Spirit Lake, IA (KICD)--The Iowa DNR is hosting a public meeting this Monday in Sprit Lake regarding proposed changes to Iowa's Aquatic Invasive Species law.
Iowa DNR Fisheries Bureau Executive Director Martin Konrad says the code language was first created in 2001 with no changes since 2005.
The main changes are a requirement for boaters to drain water out of their boat and to inspect their boat and trailer for aquatic invasive species prior to transport on the highway.
Konrad says there is virtually no opposition to the changes.
Monday's meeting will start at 3:00 p.m. at the Expo Building in Spirit Lake and is expected to last about 90 minutes. The DNR will be accepting comments on the proposal until July 31, 2012. Three meetings have been scheduled to obtain public comment. Written comments can be sent to Martin Konrad, Iowa DNR Fisheries Bureau, Wallace State Office Building, 502 East 9th Street, Des Moines, IA 50319-0034, by email to martin.konrad@dnr.iowa.gov, or FAX at 515-281-6794. Persons who wish to convey their views orally should contact the Fisheries Bureau at 515-281-6976, at the Bureau offices on the fourth floor of the Wallace State Office Building, or at the scheduled public meetings.
If the DNR does not receive sufficient comments in support of these legislative they may decide to not request the legislature make any changes to Iowa's Aquatic Invasive Species laws.
