Spencer, IA (KICD)--Plenty of discussion is held on the topic of an agreement between the city and Spencer School District providing for a School Resource Officer at Monday night's Spencer City Council session.

Councilmember Ron Hanson was the lone nay vote on the matter as he did not agree with the city paying out up to $10,000 for the position.



The Spencer School District cut this position a few years back when budget issues arose.  Councilmember Steve Bomgaars spoke in favor of the move.



Hanson went on to reiterate that he is in favor of having an SRO in the schools, but simply does not think the city should be pitching in towards the cost.



Police Chief Mark Lawson noted that retired Policeman Mike Wilson will be filling this role.



Lawson says having WIlson in place is a positive proactive move.



WIlson will be an employee of the Spencer School District; however the City will supply him with a car and uniform.  He will deal with the middle school and high school and will help with truancy issues.
