Warm Weather Tips

Spencer, IA (KICD) -- While temperatures of 90 degrees or higher are not rare in Northwest Iowa or Southwest Minnesota, neither are problems that can can occur because of that heat.

Phil Schumacher is a Meteorologist at the Sioux Falls National Weather Service.  He says that while people know about keeping hydrated while in the heat for extended periods, not every type of drink is going to hydrate you...

Schumacher says also to make sure you allow yourself a 5 minute break or two...

.

Odd as it may sound, wearing a light colored long sleeve cotton shirt to keep the sun off your bare skin can help also, Schumacher says, as well as wearing a hat that can vent as well.

Breathing problems can arise, from the combination of heat and high humidities, especially for anyone with asthma for example.

One of the biggest risks of the heat is suffering a heat stroke.  Schumacher tells what to look for if one thinks that may be an issue...

One last point Schumacher says is to really beware of leaving kids in vehicles even for a short time...

Schumacher says taking the five minute breaks or taking five minutes to undo your child from the car seat and putting them back in, can make a life saving difference
