High Wind, Rain Delay Crop Spraying

Spencer, IA: (May 31, 2012) - Between the persistent high winds, an inch or more of rain, and the cool nighttime temperatures, not a whole lot of corn is being sprayed for weeds this week in northwest Iowa.

But the weeds continue to grow, as does the corn. And Iowa State University Extension Agronomist Paul Kassel reminds growers that there is a size limit on corn when spraying glyphosate.

Just a couple of weeks ago, growers were worried about planting soybean seed in dry soils. Now, just the opposite conditions could pose problems for the soybeans, according to Kassel.

Last week’s concern, rootless corn syndrome, has largely been resolved with the recent rains.
