Spencer, IA (KICD) -- Residents across the country are asked to Wear Red Friday for National Wear Red Day.
The meaning is to help spread the message that heart disease is the number one killer of women. While heart disease is largely preventable, it kills more women then all forms of cancer combined.
Jeannette Hasley is Director of OB, Womens Health, and Diabetic Education at Spencer Hospital. She tells KICD News of the event planned and the reasoning behind it...
Even though heart disease is the number one killer of women, it doesn't seem to get into the spotlight like other diseases, such as cancer..
Hasley says that while men and women both can get heart disease, identifying symptoms of it are quite different...
Hasley goes on to say that wearing red Friday isn't the only thing going on to promote heart health this weekend...
There will be checkups for several different health issues, Halsey says, as well as an additional piece of equipment...
Hasley encourages all to support the effort this Friday, and to have a checkup, at Spencer Hospital, or their local hospital.
