Spencer, IA: (Jan. 30, 2012) - The EPA on Friday said the U.S. biodiesel industry has reached a key milestone by producing more than 1 billion gallons of fuel in 2011.
The total volume of nearly 1.1 billion gallons swamped the previous record of 690 million set in 2008. And it easily exceeded the 800 million gallon target required under the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS).
National Biodiesel Board spokesperson, Anne Steckel, says the numbers prove that the biodiesel tax incentive is “working just as Congress envisioned.”
Steckel says an economic study commissioned by the Biodiesel Board found that the industry supports nearly 40-thousand jobs (39,027) across the country and more than $2.1 billion in household income.
Steckel says the industry is calling on Congress to re-instate the $1/gallon tax credit that expired in December. They also want the Obama Administration to boost the RFS biodiesel volume requirement to 1.28 billion gallons for 2013.
