Zoetis To Collaborate With ISU On Vaccine For Swine Disease

Spencer, IA: (Feb. 12, 2014) – Feedstuffs Magazine is reporting that Zoetis Inc. will partner with Iowa State University to identify and test a vaccine to help control the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDv) in the U.S.

New cases of the PED virus continue to mount. Since the beginning of December, more than 100 new cases have been reported each week. Since the disease was first confirmed in the U.S. in April of 2013, the PED virus has been confirmed in 23 states and in Canada. Mortality for infected piglets up to three weeks old runs as high as 100 percent.

Zoetis has also worked with the University of Minnesota to develop a diagnostic test for the disease. Zoetis says producers should remain vigilant with their biosecurity practices to deter the spread of the PED virus while countermeasures are being developed.
