Storm Lake Child Endangerment

Storm Lake, IA (KICD) — A report of a child on a roadway lands a Storm Lake man in jail.

Late Saturday night, Storm Lake Police took a report of a small child on a road that was nearly struck by a passing vehicle. When police arrived, the reporting party told them the toddler had run out into the street. An adult male chased the child, falling down before he got the child off the road. There were no injuries.

Police found the pair in a nearby laundromat, identifying the adult as 32-year old Curtis Optaia, and determined he was under the intoxicating influence of the Kava plant, which left him incapable of watching the child.

After further investigation, Optaia was arrested on charges of Child Endangerment, and Public Intoxication. He was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $2300 bond. The 2-year old and an 11-year old were both turned over to the custody of family members. A report has been filed with the Department of Human Services.
