Scam Thwarted

Emmetsburg, IA (KICD)–An attempted scam of a Ruthven resident was recently thwarted.

The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office says the person received a letter and a check from Apex Financial Incorporated for $4,350 and claimed they were the 2nd prize winner of the European, African, and USA consumer sweepstakes. There were instructions to case the check and send a processing fee of $3,850 in order to claim a $350,000 full prize. The check was made out to Midwest Band of Pierce, Nebraska who said they have received hundreds of reports of these checks.

The Sheriff’s Office encourages anyone who receives these or other similar style checks to not cash them. Most of these scams originate overseas and prosecution is next to impossible.
