Scam Resurfaces

Scam Resurfaces

Storm Lake, IA (KICD)–Storm Lake Police have received multiple reports of a telephone scam that has resurfaced in the area.

In this scenario the caller says they are affiliated with an insurance company and telling the citizen and/or business that they are entitled to an inheritance claim.  The caller then asks the victim to share with them their bank account access numbers and codes in order that the inheritance can by transferred into the victim s account.  The caller will then illegally attempt to conduct a bogus wire transfer and ultimately ask the victim to refund money to them that was transferred accidentally in excess of their awarded inheritance.

Citizens are advised that if they receive a call such as this that they should consult with their local bank, family attorney or local law enforcement before sharing any personal information.

This type of scam has been around for many years and has recently resurfaced in the area.
