Sapp Trial Moved

Orange City, IA (KICD) — The trial for an Orange City day care provider charged with murder has been moved.

On Wednesday, an order was signed to move the trial of Rochelle Sapp from Sioux County to Carroll County. That order was signed by Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark S. Cady granting District Judge Edward Jacobson, who will preside over the case, the authority to hear the case in the Second Judicial District, which includes Carroll County, rather than the Third District in which Sioux County is located.

Sapp’s attorney, Edward Bjornstad, sought the move, saying that all the publicity would make it hard to find an impartial jury in Sioux County. Prosecutors didn’t reisst the move, as Assistant Iowa Attorney General Coleman McAllister requested a location convenient for witnesses and members of the victim’s family. A trial date has not been set.

Sapp is charged with first-degree murder and child endangerment. She is accused of fatally injuring 3-year-old Autumn Elgersma while watching her on Oct. 29th, by picking up the girl and throwing her down on the ground because she didn’t ask for help taking off her jacket.. Autumn died two days later at a Sioux Falls hospital from blunt-force head injuries.
