Rock Valley Sex Abuse Sentence


Orange City, IA (KICD)–A Rock Valley man will spend five years on probation after pleading guilty to charges of 3rd Degree Sex Abuse and Telephone Dissemination of Obscene Material to a Minor.

The case arose in June of 2013 when a Hawarden police officer observed two people under the age of 18 walking down the street well past curfew. The male was identified as 22-year-old Jonathan Hankelaus and the female was a 15-year-old. The mother of the girl reported that she had trouble with Hankelaus over the past year and she found an obscene text message on her daughter s phone. The girl admitted that she had sexual intercourse with Hankelaus when she was 14 and 15-years-old.

Hankelaus received a suspended prison term of 10 years and a life term committing him into the custody of the Director of the Iowa Department of Corrections. He must also register as a sex offender.
