North Grand Looking for Historic Nod

North Grand Looking for Historic Nod

Spencer, IA (KICD)–Spencer’s Grand Avenue Improvement Corporation has decided to forge ahead with getting the historic North Grand residential district listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Historic Preservation Chairperson Sheriffa Jones tells KICD News that she has worked on this effort for the past two and a half years.

Approximately 97 contributing houses or buildings and another 21 non-contributing items one are a part of the nomination which includes properties on North Grand from 9th to 18th Street and from 1st Avenue West to 1st Avenue East.

Jones says this effort was brought forth in an effort to protect the district from newer development.  Being on the national register does include some perks.

Jones says they will find out how the application fared on February 14th in Des Moines.  If approved the official designation would likely come this Summer.
