North Grand Earns Historic Designation

North Grand Earns Historic Designation

Spencer, IA (KICD)–Grand Avenue is in line to be designation as the North Grand Avenue Residential Historic District by the National Historic Register.
Mary Jean Montgomery with the Grand Avenue Improvement Corporation contacted KICD News following the hearing in Des Moines at the Historic Preservation Office with the good news.

The effort to recognize Spencer’s historic street and neighborhood was begun by the Grand Avenue Improvement Corporation in 2010.
With over 97 contributing properties, the proposal identifies a linear neighborhood with a century of at least a dozen different kinds of architecture including Victorian, Greek Revival, Colonial Revival, Bungalow, Tudor Revival, Four Square and Craftsman.  The district includes properties on North Grand from 9th to 18th Street and from 1st Avenue West to 1st Avenue East.
A pair of vans toting 11 from Spencer to Des Moines attended today’s hearing.
