Heron Lake, MN (KICD) — A Heron Lake man is arrested on multiple drug charges.
Early Friday morning, the Jackson County Sheriffs Office, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation executed a search warrant at a Heron Lake residence, owned by 51-year old Esteban Chavez-Cruz.
Before the search took place the HEAT team was deployed on the residence, but Chavez-Cruz was not inside. The search of the residence turned up approximately 4 lbs of methamphetamine, around 5 lbs of marijuana, an estimated $50,000 in cash, along with 5 guns. All the items were found in hidden compartments under the floor of an upstairs bedroom. There were also 6 children in the residence at the time of the search.
Law Enforcement found Chavez-Cruz driving a van in town, and initiated a traffic stop, after which, Chavez-Cruz refused to leave the vehicle. The HEAT team was again deployed and he was taken into custody without incident. A search of the van produced 2 additional ounces of methamphetamine. Street value of the meth is approximately $80,000, while the marijuana has a street value of about $7500.
Chavez-Cruz was charged with one felony count of controlled substance in the 1st degree, possession of methamphetamine, a felony count of 5th possession of a controlled substance-marijuana, and two felony controlled substance crimes involving children. Chavez-Cruz remains in the Jackson County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
