Spencer, IA: (Dec. 26, 2013) – Fire damaged a Cargill meatpacking plant near Dodge City, Kansas earlier this week. Fire crews worked five hours Monday evening trying to put out all of the hot spots.

The cause of the fire is not known although a spokesman for the Ford County Fire/EMS told a local radio station the fire may have started from a heater.

The plant, which was scheduled to be shuttered two days this week for the Christmas holidays, is expected to reopen Thursday and be fully operational by Friday.

Cargill’s Dodge City plant is its largest and employs 2700 people. The company announced plans in August to spend $48 million on a new automated system at the Dodge City plant. The goal was to increase capacity six-fold.
