Primghar, IA, (May 14, 2014) – Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, along with several partners, hosted the annual Farm Safety Day Camp at the O’Brien County Fair Grounds on Friday, May 9th. 100 2nd grade students from South O’Brien and Hartley Melvin Sanborn schools attended a half day event.
FFA members from the two schools helped present sessions including animal safety, tractor/PTO safety, sun safety, chemical safety & grain safety. Employees of the North West REC presented some great information on electrical safety. Baum Harmon Memorial Hospital provided water and snacks for the participants.
One child dies every three days on a farm. Every day 38 kids are injured in an agricultural related accident. Although it is true that the rate of farm injuries among youth has declined by over 60% since 1998, it is estimated that over 7700 kids are injured each year on the farm.
Iowa State University Extension & Outreach and its partners realize the importance of making children aware of the hazards not only found on the farm, but anywhere children might work or play.
