Spencer, IA (CCF)–The floriculture, country wine, and agriculture departments “dig in” for another year of great competition at the Clay County Fair, September 6-14.
The country wine competition has been growing for the past 30 years. In recent years, the department has received over 90 bottles to judge and display for the duration of the fair. Exhibitors can enter ten different categories including sweet and dry varieties of grape, fruit, and vegetable wines.
The agriculture department seeks all green thumbs to submit entries. Exhibitors do not have to be a farmer or experienced gardener to enter. Anyone can show what they grow! All entries are welcome from fields to potted plants. The goal is to make the Fair a learning experience for all exhibitors. Get your hands dirty this spring and include all members of the family! Many classes are broken down into age groups. Special categories only open to youth are decorating pumpkins, making jack-o-lanterns, and pumpkin scratch art.
Check out this year’s fun, yard contests. Each age group may participate in our Garden Scarecrow Contest and Yard People Contest. Each of these creative yard pieces will be displayed with large pumpkins at the southeast entry of the Agriculture Building. The Clay County Fair is sponsoring a Special Corn Show for 2014 showcasing your best 10 ears of corn. The winner’s from each class will receive a trophy while be crowned “County Champion Corn Grower” or “District Champion Corn Grower.”
