Spencer, IA: (Mar. 25, 2014) – A statue of Iowa’s Norman Borlaug was unveiled at the U.S. Capitol in Washington Tuesday morning. The statue will be one of two representing the state at the Capitol’s National Statuary Hall.

Borlaug was a Cresco native whose work in drought-resistant wheat genetics is credited with saving a billion people world-wide from starvation.

Iowa Senator Charles Grassley, speaking with reporters, said having a statue of Borlaug in Statuary Hall will tell a powerful story to millions of visitors to the nation’s Capitol.

This afternoon, the Agriculture Department is hosting a symposium highlighting the future of agriculture and food security, featuring both CEOs and students who are following Borlaug’s legacy by being involved in research.

The U.S. Botanic Garden near the Capitol is featuring a special talk by Benjamin Victor, the sculptor of the Borlaug statue. And the garden will also open a special wheat exhibit that will run for several months.

In Des Moines, the World Food Prize Foundation that Borlaug founded is hosting special events at the Hall of Laureates. The Iowa State Historical Museum will hosting a special agricultural artwork exhibit and an exhibit of antique tractors.

Today is the 100th anniversary of Borlaug’s birth.
