What the heck is ‘conscious uncoupling?’

The divorce of actress Gwyneth Paltrow and rocker Chris Martin might spawn a new trend: “conscious uncoupling.”

Ever since news of the end of the couple’s 10-year marriage broke on Tuesday, the term has been tossed around by relationship experts on morning shows and become the butt of a few jokes.

The couple announced the news – which came just four months after their 10-year anniversary – on Paltrow’s lifestyle website, Goop.com. The post talks about how both Paltrow and Martin intend to put their two children first and admitted they had been working on their marriage for several months.

But the most talked about portion of the blog was the new buzzword.

“We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and coparent, we will be able to continue in the same manner,” the post says.

So what exactly is this PC word for divorce?

According to an accompanying Goop post written by Dr. Habib Sadeghi & Dr. Sherry Sami, it is:

“A conscious uncoupling is the ability to understand that every irritation and argument was a signal to look inside ourselves and identify a negative internal object that needed healing. Because present events always trigger pain from a past event, it’s never the current situation that needs the real fixing. It’s just the echo of an older emotional injury. If we can remain conscious of this during our uncoupling, we will understand it’s how we relate to ourselves internally as we go through an experience that’s the real issue, not what’s actually happening.”

Whatever they call it, we wish Paltrow, Martin, and their family the best.
