Emmetsburg, IA: A ribbon cutting was held at the Farm Laboratory of Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) Thursday afternoon as the college officially designated the Swine Training Center as ready for population.
The new 7500 square foot center includes farrowing, nursery and three finishing rooms. It is connected to the existing breeding and gestation building by an enclosed walkway.
ILCC Swine Instructor Kelly Dodge says the farrowing room will accommodate 12 sows and their litters. The six-pen nursery handles 120 feeder pigs and three finisher rooms can accommodate a maximum of 120 hogs each.
Dodge says adding the addition of finishing rooms will allow students to follow the hogs all the way to market-weight, something they were not able to do before.
Dodge says the new facility will receive its first sows early next month.
