Spencer, IA (KICD)–The Spencer City Council unanimously approved the expansion of a popular program aimed at spurning housing starts on Monday night.
Approximately 35 individuals have taken advantage of the Quality Housing Initiative which was started last year with the goal of 40 new homes over a three year timeframe. Councilmembers Randy Swanson and Ron Hanson voiced their support.
Last night’s action allocates and additional $100,000 from the city and expands the program to run until September 1st of 2016. 40 new home builds in the $110,000-$195,000 range are eligible for a $15,000 grant through the QHI Initiative. Area Banks, Clay County, and Spencer Municipal Utilities have partnered with the city on this project.
A bid of over $543,000 for the Little Sioux River Trail/Bridge Project was approved. This project will extend the city’s recreational trail from West Leach Park to Thunder Bridge Road and include a pedestrian bridge that extends out over the Ocheyedan River. The project cost included $385,000 in SAFTEA-LU grants and a $125,000 REAP grant. The balance will come out of the city’s CIP fund. Work is slated to begin this Fall.
