Sibley-Ocheyedan Bullying Charges

Rock Rapids, IA (KICD) — A bullying incident results in three Sibley-Ocheyedan 8th grade students facing charges.

Lyon County Sheriff Steward Vander Stoep said the 3 Sibley-Ocheyedan Middle School football players face misdemeanor charges for allegedly bullying a teammate before a game in Rock Rapids last month.

One student has already been charged, and the other two are expected to be given charges within the next week.the next week. The charges include Simple Assault, Assault With Sexual Intent, and Disseminating Pornography.,  The pornography was reportedly shared on a student’s smartphone.

The alleged bullying incident happened on a Sibley-Ocheyedan school bus as the team waited to start a game at Rock Rapids, on October 15th.  The victim’s parents reported it to the sheriff on Oct. 17.

School Superintendent Bill Boer said Thursday that he had spoken to the alleged victim’s parents and that students had been suspended from school. He would not say how many students or provide details about the incident or any possible further disciplinary action.

Sibley-Ocheyedan school board are holding a public meeting on the incident at 9 a.m. this morning, (Saturday) at the middle school library and then go into executive session, according to a board chairperson.

The investigation is ongoing and additional details were not available.  The students’ names are not being released since they are being treated as juveniles.  The charges will likely be transferred from juvenile court in Lyon County to Osceola County.
