Fatal Sioux County Accident

Hospers, IA (KICD) — A Hospers man is dead following a two vehicle accident.

The Sioux County Sheriffs Office said the accident occurred shortly before 5:20 Tuesday morning, on Highway 60, two miles south of Hospers. 50-year old David De Jong, was driving a 1997 Chevrolet C35 pickup northbound on Highway 60, when he was rear ended by a northbound 2011 Freightliner semi, pulling a loaded flatbed trailer, and driven by 45-year old Henry Wingate, of Sioux City.

After the collision, both vehicles entered the east ditch and rolled over. De Jong was ejected from his vehicle, and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Sioux County Medical Examiner. Wingate was transported by Hospers Ambulance to the Orange City Hospital with severe injuries; and was later transported by the Orange City Ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

The Chevrolet sustained approximately $10,000 in damages. The Freightliner, trailer and contents sustained approximately $100,000 in damages.
