Drought Expands In Midwest

Spencer, IA: Drought continues to spread in the heart of the Corn Belt. Today’s report from the U.S. Drought Monitor said nearly 29 percent of the Midwest is experiencing some level of drought, up from 25 percent last week. The portion of the region experiencing “severe” drought nearly doubled to 7 percent, with pockets of severe drought emerging in western Wisconsin and central Minnesota.

The numbers for Iowa were even more alarming. Thirty-two percent of the state is classified as in a “severe” drought, up from 22.4 percent one week ago. Sixty-three percent of Iowa is in some form of drought, up from 60 percent last week.
