Spencer, IA: Buena Vista County is the latest Iowa county to release C-R-P for grazing.
The release was requested this week by the county FSA Committee after a portion of the county was classified “D-2” status, or “severe drought,” on the U.S. Drought Monitor.
The release is for grazing only and does not allow for haying of CRP. Grazing is allowed through September 30th.
County Executive Director Rex Wittrock says grazing is not permitted on CRP filter strips, waterways and other practices that improve water quality. Producers must leave at least 25 percent of the field ungrazed for wildlife benefit.
Wittrock says a payment reduction of 10 percent will apply to the number of acres grazed. He says producers interested in grazing CRP acres should contact the county FSA office first.
