Cargill Will Stop Purchase Of Zilmax-Fed Cattle

Spencer, IA: Cargill says it will stop purchasing cattle finished on the feed additive Zilmax. Spokesman Mike Martin says cattle suppliers have been told Cargill “will allow those (cattle) currently being fed Zilmax to cycle through the supply chain.” Martin said the final cattle in Cargill’s supply chain being fed Zilmax will be harvested by the end of September.

Cargill has not linked Zilmax to any specific incidents involving animal well-being.

It’s estimated that 70 to 80 percent of the U.S. cattle herd was finished on either Zilmax or Optaflexx last year.
