Biotech Labeling Ballot Initiative Defeated

Spencer, IA: (Nov. 07, 2013) – A ballot initiative was defeated in Tuesday’s election in Washington State that would have required labels for most foods sold in the state that included biotech crops.

The results are not yet finalized because mail-in ballots need to be counted, but early results showed the initiative failing 55% to 45%, with nearly one million people casting ballots on the issue.

The win marks the second time in as many years that agriculture and the food industry have been able to defeat a ballot referendum on biotech food labeling. A year ago, a similar proposition in California was defeated 51% to 49%, but opponents spent $45 million to defeat it.
