Area Accidents

Sanborn, IA (KICD) — A Sanborn man is injured in a rear end collision.

On Thursday morning, the O’Brien County Sheriffs Office responded to the accident, west of Sanborn. A westbound 2013 Ford Taurus, driven by 54-year old Judy Nieuwenhuis of Hospers, had stopped to make a left turn onto Oriole Avenue. 89-year old Albert Newendorp approached the Taurus from behind, in a 1987 AMC Commanche, and failed to see the Taurus was stopped.

Newendorp applied the brakes, failed to stop in time, striking the rear of the Taurus. Newendorp received non incapacitating injuries, while Niewenhuis was uninjured. The Taurus received approximately $10,000 in damage, and the Commanche received approximately $1000 in damage.


Jackson, MN (KICD) — Three people received injuries in a two vehicle accident, north of Jackson.

The Jackson County Sheriffs Office said the accident occurred around 11:30 Friday morning at the intersection of 830th Street and 490th Avenue. 35-year old Jamie Gilmore of Lakefield was driving an unidentified vehicle, and collided with a 2009 Chrysler, driven by 73-year old Betty Crowell of Windom.

Both vehicles ended up in the northwest ditch. Both drivers along with a passenger in Crowell’s vehicle, 74-year old Clifford Crowell, of Windom were injured in the accident. Gilmore was taken to the Jackson Hospital by ambulance, while the Crowells were taken to the Windom Hospital by ambulance.


Algona, IA (KICD) — Four people are injured in a pair of Algona accidents.
Two people were injured in a two vehicle crash Saturday afternoon at the intersection between Hy-Vee and K-Mart in Algona. The Algona Police said Mary Popejoy of Bode drove her 1997 Chevy Lumina out in front of a northbound 2007 Ford F-150, driven by James Schonert of Algona, and the vehicles collided in the intersection, with the Lumina coming to rest in the west ditch.

Popejoy had to be removed from her vehicle, by the Algona fire Department, with the use of the Jaws of Life. Algona EMS then transported her and Schonert to Kossuth Regional Health Center, with non-incapacitating injuries. The pickup received an estimated $4500 in damages, while the Lumina was totalled.

Popejoy was cited with failure to obey a red light. Assisting at the scene was the Kossuth County Sheriffs Department.
Then, Algona Police said two from Emmetsburg were injured early Sunday morning, when Stefanie Stienkamp was driving a 2006 Pontiac G6 westbound on McGregor Road, west of Algona, when she lost control of the vehicle, resulting in the Pontiac striking the south side of the bridge, then veering across the road, striking the north side of the bridege before coming to rest on the south side of the street.

Steinkamp and a passenger, Eric Robinson, were taken by Algona EMS to the Kossuth Regional Health Center with non-incapacitating injuries.


Hartley, IA (KICD) — A Primghar man received injuries in a single vehicle rollover.

The O’Brien County Sheriffs Office said the accident happened Saturday morning around 11:00, on 380th Street, south of Hartley. 26-year old Steven Flick of Hartley was driving a 1995 Buick Le Sabre west on 380th Street, when an unknown eastbound vehicle approached,

As Flick moved over to avoid being hit by the oncoming vehicle, he lost control, entering the north ditch with the Buick rolling over. Flick was not injured in the crash, but a passenger in the Buick, Jeremy Bobzien received injuries on his head, and stated he may have passed out, but refused medical attention.

The Buick received $1000 in damage, and was totalled.
