Spencer, IA (KICD)–A Dickens man was sentenced to 7 years in prison on Monday in connection to the death of a Spencer man following a fight at the Grand Tap last September.
23-year-old Chase Foote entered a guilty plea to a class D felony count of involuntary manslaughter and misdemeanor charges of assault causing serious injury and public intoxication in front of Judge Carl J. Peterson in Clay County District Court.
The family of the victim, 44-year-old Jefferson Wilbur, were on hand in the courtroom adorned with shirts that read “Jeff is Our Hero.” No victim impact statements were given at the hearing although it was noted that the family had a chance to meet with Foote last Monday. Clay County Attorney Mike Houchins spoke with KICD News about that meeting after the hearing.
Wilbur spent 77 days in the hospital before passing away on November 18th. Foote was also ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution to the family and will be responsible for a medical claim.
