Spirit Lake, IA (KICD)--Spirit Lake elementary students will be greeted with tragic news when they return to school this morning. Over the weekend, one of their classmates died in a vehicle crash on the interstate near Worthington.
6 year old Jonah Holmes was in a Nissan Versa heading East on Interstate 90, when a Ford Explorer plowed through the median and into their path. The driver of the Nissan - 44 year old Kevin Bakker - and passenger - 27 year old Michelle Holmes - are both in critical condition at last report. Authorities say there was also an infant in the Bakker vehicle. The driver of the Explorer - 30 year old James Fischer of Luverne, Minnesota - was treated and released.
The Minnesota State Patrol says Fisher lost control of his vehicle on ice, crossed the median, and was struck broadside.
Spirit Lake elementary school principal Shane Boeve alerted teachers by e-mail yesterday, and attempted to contact all of the parents in the boy's homeroom to tell them the news. Teachers are to meet in the school's media center this morning at 7:30 and counselors will be available for children and families.
The Schuchert funeral home of Spirit Lake is handling the funeral arrangements for 6 year old Jonah Holmes.
