School Enrollment Figures

Des Moines, IA (KICD) -- The latest school enrollment figures contradicts the latest 5 year trend.

The figures released by the Iowa Department of Education show that around 50% of the schools across the state saw increases in enrollment, while 50% saw a decrease.

Jay Pennington is with the Department of Education, and confirms that this years figures clearly contradict the multi year trend...

Some of the northwest Iowa schools in the positive include West Sioux with a 63 student increase or 10.2 percent, Okoboji up by 56 students or 6.3 percent, and Sibley-Ocheyedan up 24 students, or 3.3 percent. Spencer did see an increase of 19 students, or 0.9 percent.

Pennington says that while this years numbers are good news for the outlying districts in the state, other information such as birth data that is used, shows what the projected trend will be...

Some northwest Iowa schools that saw larger decreases, include Clay Central-Everly with a decline of 43 students or 11.1 percent, Spirit Lake down 31 students or 2.6 percent, and West Bend-Mallard, down 13 students or 4 percent.
