School Election Results

Spencer, IA (KICD)--Voters in the Spencer School district have elected three new board members.

Excluding provisional ballots Bob Whittenburg led the way garnering 746 votes. He says "board members need to be model learners and I will be practicing that now. I will try to learn all I can about the basics of school finance and the district budget and all that encompasses. I think it is a time of change throughout all public schools but it is also a time of great opportunity."

Bill Zinn followed with a vote total of 698. The Spencer High graduate says "like the shorts say on the football sidelines I bleed purple and gold, and I do because I do believe in the school system. School funding needs to be on the top burner. There are a lot of things you be be doing as a board member in the next few weeks before your first board meeting. I want to have a meeting with the Superintendent and find out what is going on."

The final person voted on is Dean Mechler who bring some experience to the board. Mechler edged out incumbent Dave Schlictemeier by a 600-560 vote. Mechler noted that "for David I would like to thank him for 6 years of service and i am going to miss his passion for education . The strength of my candidacy was probably experience and that first year of trying to learn about public school financing is daunting, some people never fully grasp it, and that is not their fault it is very difficult. I think I have a good handle on it and I also think we have a strong administrator who understands it very well. I do think there is going to be a steep learning curve for Bob and Bill. I am sure Mr. Ebeling will bring them on board and if I can help in any way I would be more than willing to answer their questions."

The other contested race in Clay County saw Tony Seivert defeat Sheryl Kahl by a vote of 94-48 to take the Clay Central Everly district 2 position.

Jen Von Bank beat out Thomas Umscheid 130-97 for the at large post on the Armstrong-Ringsted Board.

Susan Rensick won the district one seat on the Sheldon School Board and will join incumbent Randy Merley who was able to stay at his post.

Sioux Central voters nixed an instructional support levy with over 68 percent voting against the measure. Marcela Koth and Peter Steinfeld were voted onto the Strom Lake board. Elsewhere in Buena Vista County Bruce Gleinke and Gigi Genevieve Wilson will serve in Alta. Gordon Grau won the post in Newell-Fonda

Sibley-Ocheydan will have Keith Newman, Jose Alvarado, and Tracy J. Van Diepen on their next board.

Mike Prior ousted Jack Tatman for the Iowa Lakes Community College District 3 Director post by a vote of 116-77. Robert M. Jennings defeated Lynn Kueck 332-251 to take over the District 7 post at Iowa Lakes.

Other races were uncontested or will be filled by write in candidates. All of the voting is unofficial until confirmed by the respective county boards of supervisors.
