POET-DSM has contracted with International Technology Group ANDRITZ to supply a two-step biomass treatment process for Project Liberty, the commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol plant being constructed near Emmetsburg in northwest Iowa.
POET spokesman Matt Merritt says the ANDRITZ technology is a two-stage process which will help draw out available sugars from the cellulose material. Merritt says it is those sugars that get converted into ethanol.
Merritt says POET-DSM continues to move forward on schedule for both the construction and feedstock procurement aspects of the project. Merritt says POET-DSM has acquired 85,000 tons of “biomass harvest” from local farmers. Project Liberty will use corn cobs, husks and light stover to produce 25 million gallons of cellulosic bio-ethanol per year.
