Janssen has several ties to northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota. She grew up on a dairy farm in Lake Park, attended technical school in Jackson, graduating from the court reporter program. She worked six years in a Lakefield law office and began working in the Clay County Clerk of Court's office in July, 1988. She became Clerk of Court in Clay County in 2009. She is married to Lance Janssen, a project technician for Alpha Wireless, and they have two daughters, Allison, and Melissa.
